Sustainability
As a family business who have lived and worked in Broome for 35+ years, we believe we have a duty to our community to be good corporate citizens. Sustainability and minimising our impact on the environment are very important to us and are considered in all aspects of our business.
Our Jewellery
Our design process focuses on showcasing pearls—the only sustainable gem created by a living organism—making them an inherently eco-friendly choice. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to showcase the pearl's beauty while ensuring durability and timeless elegance. Through the recycling and refining of by-products our jewellers reduce the amount of wastage in the production of our locally assembled and manufactured items. Our jewellery reflects a commitment to sustainability while offering long-lasting, heritage-quality items that can be treasured for generations.
Harvest Cafe
Our café prioritises sustainability at every step, from sourcing local ingredients to reducing waste through mindful practices. We proudly serve pearl meat harvested from our oysters, celebrating a unique connection to our farm. By sourcing ingredients from local suppliers, we minimise transport emissions while supporting the regional economy. On-site, we grow some of our own vegetables, ensuring the freshest produce for our dishes and further reducing our environmental footprint. Composting waste and using recyclable tableware enhance our eco-friendly efforts, while innovative solutions like bulk carbonated water systems help us cut down on unnecessary packaging. Through our participation in the Containers for Change program, we ensure beverage containers are recycled responsibly, contributing to a circular economy. Altogether, these efforts reflect our dedication to a dining experience that’s as eco-conscious as it is enjoyable.
Supporting The Local Community
Willie Creek Pearls is proud to support philanthropic enterprises that engage our local communities and make a difference in the lives of people who need it most. As a Western Australian family-owned business, we are fortunate to support a wide range of individuals and organisations on both a local and national level.
We are proud to give back to the communities that have given so much to us.
Environmentalism
We are proud to hold Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, a globally recognised standard for sustainable seafood practices. This certification ensures that our practices meet rigorous standards for environmental responsibility, protecting marine ecosystems and supporting sustainable fisheries. With MSC certification, we’re able to contribute actively to the health of our oceans while offering high-quality, responsibly sourced products.
Environmental responsibility drives everything we do, from sustainable water practices to comprehensive waste management. Our desalination system provides fresh water, while greywater is naturally and responsibly disposed of to protect the surrounding ecosystem. Although we currently rely on diesel power, we are preparing for a solar-powered future, with facility upgrades designed to support this transition. Waste is carefully managed through composting green waste, recycling initiatives, and transporting rubbish back to town for proper disposal. We also contribute to replanting native trees and offset greenhouse gas emissions through carbon offset programs, further reducing our environmental footprint.
Pearling
Our pearling practices benefit from the natural role of oysters as filter feeders, which help keep the surrounding waters clean and balanced. Working within sustainable limits set by the Fisheries Department, we carefully manage wild oyster stock to protect the marine ecosystem. This approach ensures that our pearling operations support the environment, allowing both oysters and the waters they inhabit to thrive together.
General Practices
By repurposing waste materials, we reduce landfill contributions and breathe new life into discarded items, crafting unique art pieces that celebrate environmental awareness and creativity. This innovative approach transforms waste into a resource, showcasing sustainability in unexpected and beautiful ways. We also prioritise reducing emissions and environmental impact by transporting staff to the farm in a shared vehicle, minimising traffic and protecting the pristine natural surroundings of the Kimberley.
Marine Biomedical
Pearl farming not only produces exquisite gems but also generates mother-of-pearl as a valuable by-product, unlocking revolutionary opportunities in marine biomedical technology. The unique properties of mother-of-pearl, such as its strength, biocompatibility, and regenerative potential, make it an ideal material for use in cutting-edge medical advancements. Its biocompatibility and strength make it an ideal material for biomedical uses, transforming what was once a waste product into something with life-changing potential. This innovation highlights how pearl farming can intersect with science to create solutions that benefit both people and the environment.
