Our Tour Boat

Willie Creek Pearls is proud to announce the launch of Mimi Pearl on the 9th of May 2025, a state-of-the-art solar-powered vessel and the newest addition to its multi-award-winning Willie Creek Pearl Farm Tour in Broome. Purpose-built to explore the breathtaking waters of Willie Creek with minimal environmental impact, Mimi Pearl represents a significant advancement in sustainable tourism. Her launch not only enhances the visitor experience but also reinforces Broome’s position as a leader in environmentally conscious travel, setting a positive example for tourism operators across the region and building on the success of our multi-award-winning tours.

Quietly powered by renewable energy and fitted with a 6.5 kW bifacial solar panel array, Mimi Pearl removes the need for fossil fuels, reducing emissions and risks associated with fuel handling in sensitive marine environments. Her near-silent operation offers a calmer, cleaner way to explore, without the disruption of engine noise or fumes. This benefits not only visitors, but also the marine life that calls Willie Creek their home. The move away from petroleum-based fuels also reduces the production and transport of waste materials, lowering the environmental impact of vessel maintenance and servicing. Willie Creek Pearls will save the equivalent of an estimated 787 carbon credits annually, representing 787 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases. This significant reduction supports our goal to lower emissions and operate more sustainably.

With a 46-seat capacity and upgraded accessibility features, Mimi Pearl is designed to welcome more people while placing less pressure on the environment. She is a symbol of innovation that respects both community and country.

Pearling

Our pearling practices benefit from the natural role of oysters as filter feeders, which help keep the surrounding waters clean and balanced. Working within sustainable limits set by the Fisheries Department, we carefully manage wild oyster stock to protect the marine ecosystem. This approach ensures that our pearling operations support the environment, allowing both oysters and the waters they inhabit to thrive together.

Environmentalism

We are deepening our environmental focus with a renewed commitment to conservation and biodiversity, recognising their essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and safeguarding our natural resources. Supporting the preservation of the unique habitats that underpin both the local pearling industry and the wider natural heritage of our region is a responsibility we take seriously. One of these critical ecosystems is the seagrass meadows, which serve as vital feeding grounds for marine species such as dugongs and turtles. We are proud to contribute to the Seagrass Monitoring Project, a local conservation initiative dedicated to protecting these delicate habitats for future generations.

Sustainability continues to shape every part of our operation. Our on-site desalination system delivers fresh water while reducing the need for transportation, and our greywater management protects the surrounding environment. We’ve already introduced significant infrastructure changes, such as Mimi Pearl, our new solar-powered tour vessel. Designed to reduce emissions and noise pollution, Mimi Pearl represents the future of sustainable marine tourism and is a key step in our broader transition away from diesel-powered operations.

Our environmental stewardship extends to comprehensive waste reduction practices, including composting, recycling, and the reuse of materials such as crushed shell for garden mulch. We support revegetation with native plants and participate in carbon offset programs to help balance our emissions. These efforts are reinforced by our Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, a globally respected benchmark for sustainable fisheries, which confirms that our pearling practices meet high environmental and ethical standards.

Looking ahead, we are excited to expand our partnerships with like-minded organisations and explore innovative approaches that further our sustainability goals. This spirit of collaboration and continuous improvement is at the heart of our commitment to protecting land, sea, and culture for the long term.
